THE BASICS:

WHAT:  Aestus

WHERE:  Santa Monica- 5th and Wilshire.

WHEN:  Brunch, but then they stopped serving brunch a week later, soooo…

THE DISH:

HOW TO SAY IT:  “aced-us”… we think.  I have been calling it atheist this whole time which is not only incorrect but just leads to too many philosophical conversations that I’m not trying to engage in.

WHAT IT MEANS:  It is a Latin phase for “a glow, fire, rage of heat”– at least that’s what wiki says.  They described to me that the name has something to do with the tide and anything that flows, like the ocean and cooking on an open flame (YES I took notes and they made NO sense – and NO this wasn’t a mimosa kindof bfast which would typically explain things).  If you are reading this Aestus:  add an “about us” tab.  We still don’t know WTF you are all about AND you are not cool enough to have zero explanation.

EDDR RULE BOOK:  Rule #1 – don’t name your restaurant something that no one can pronounce. Rule #2 – if you’re so obsessed with a word and decide to name your restaurant something no one can pronounce, make sure it’s at the very least googleable.

WHAT TO KNOW:  Brunch at Aestus is now extinct.  I was so confused when their brunch menu magically disappeared from the website that I called to inquire more and they confirmed that brunch has been SHUT.DOWN.  That being said, all we can offer you with this post are some pretty pics of the space and of my gorgeous mom…

WHEN TO GO:  For lunch or dinner Mon – Sat.

WHO YOU’LL SEE:  This is hard because we saw no one.  No wait that’s a lie; there was ONE other occupied table… of 2 stuck up LA girls. You know the ones that give all Angelino girls a bad name? The ones who can’t complete a sentence without talking bank accounts or using  “daddy” in every sentence…because let’s be real…”daddy” is paying for everything. Probably even wasting his hard earned money on this very brunch.  And of course they sat us RIGHT next to them.  This place is not that small and EVERY other table was free… really though?  I was there with my mom and while their conversations provided for great entertainment; it got old, real fast.  Help a sister out!

EDDR LIFE LESSON:  Moms are THE BEST.  Don’t take your time with them for granted and cherish each and every moment.  Teacher, role model and best friend… I am so lucky to have this bitch to look up to (yes I can call her a bitch… she’s a “cool” mom).

A2 FINAL THOUGHT:  Just because they most likely knew it was their last (brunch) supper the weekend I was there, it is not an excuse for the whole “we don’t give a  F***” vibe that was present (and here we thought snotty bartenders were more of a Hollywood thing).  The battle to make it in this industry is based on getting that repeat fan base and service plays a huge role in that.  You can only be new and the talk-of-the-town for so long; you have got to keep the people coming back for more.  And you SHOULD give a F***”-  there were 5 cooks in the kitchen, 2 people serving and 4 diners AND your location is PRIME-  I’m no mathematician, but those numbers can’t possibly add up.  Only because the space is cool, the food pics are pretty AND this post is kinda invalid since brunch has gone bye bye, would we be willing to give it another shot, maybe…

Praying I take after my mom and look better and better with age (she’s got that George Clooney thing going on),

Alex
