THE BASICS:

WHAT: Croft Alley

WHERE: Melrose Place; a hole-in-the-alley (literally, we almost missed it).

WHEN: 11AM-5PMMonday– Saturday.

THE DISH:

WHAT TO ORDER:  Tuna Melt ($10); simple with the most delicious, perfectly crispy bread. Also, the house-made yogurt & chlorophyll ($6), with berries & flowers is a MUST.  Too pretty to eat– is eating art a crime?  If so, we’re guilty.  And the triple chocolate truffle cookies ($5).  There were no complaints across the board.

EDDR GETS NERDY:  For those of you that were busy trying to pull a Breaking Bad in Chem lab, let us enlighten you: Chlorophyll is the green pigment in plants responsible for the absorption of light to provide energy for photosynthesis (is our intelligence turning you on yet?).  A tablespoon of chlorophyll gives you more antioxidants than a typical juice or smoothie and medically it is a remedy for bad breath (we know a few people who could stand to eat some more).  Now ask yourself:  are you smarter than a 5th grader?  If not, simply put: chlorophyll makes plants green.
WHAT TO KNOW:  The space is sooo small (roughly about 4 seats out front, 4 inside and 6 in the back courtyard) and they use paper plates (except for the yogurt).  So besides the ingredients and flavors, nothing too fancy-shmancy.
WHO TO BRING:  1 other person.  Or just yourself.  If you’ve got to get some work done (or escape your significant other/roommate/co-worker that won’t STFU– it happens) this would be the ideal spot.  EDDR may have a new go-to work space…

WHO YOU’LL SEE:  People cooler than you who:  1.  don’t work (open 11-5).  2.  dress/shop in Rag & Bone or other expensive stores on that strip.  3.  drink $8 coffees on the reg from the neighboring Alfred Coffee & Kitchen.  4.  hang out in Melrose Place.  5. people in workout clothes on their only day off (OK #5 was us — and we’re the coolest).

WHERE TO PARK:  Anywhere the 6 parking signs per space say you can.  Do you have a “permit”, will you be less than “15 minutes”, is it between “4PM and 7PM“… goodluck to you.

EDDR LIFE LESSON: Bigger isn’t always better.  You know exactly what we’re talking about…

A2 FINAL THOUGHT:  Here you feel like you’ve almost, almost, been transported to a quaint West Village spot (you New Yorkers are territorial, so apologies).  What Croft Alley is lacking in space, it is making up for in creativity and character.  They haven’t seen the last of us.

Science + food = so hott right now,

A2
